Makan is the Malaysian word for "eat" , "to eat". It also often refers to food or meal. In Malaysian, Makanan means food in general. The three (3) main meals of the day all start with the word Makan meaning "to eat" followed by the time of the day when it is taken, to wit:
Makan Pagi is Breakfast. Pagi is morning
Makan Tengah Hari is Lunch. Tengah Hari is noon
Makan Malam is Dinner. Malam is night
Makan Lewat Malam means food which is taken late at night. For a late night meal, Lewat means "late" and Lewat Malam means "late at night".
Makan Buka Puasa is Breakfast, as in "breaking" the fast during the religious fasting period.
Jemput Makan means "Please eat" or simply "Makan, Makan" means "eat, eat!, an invitation to eat.
It sound like our Ilocano dialect in the Philippines for "eat"/"to eat" which is "mangan". "Mangan Tayon" in Ilocano means "let us eat" , an invitation to eat. Mangan, mangan also means "eat, eat!, Sounds so familiar, it evoked childhood memories when my daddy used to speak to us in simple Ilocano words.
